The London Gatwick North Terminal redevelopment project has commenced with a multi-million-pound investment. A component of this development is the installation of architectural ribbons on the ceiling, enhancing the terminal's aesthetic appeal. These elegant ribbons, located on the north, south and centre of the terminal, serve both functional and visual purposes.
Referred to as the "Central Ribbon," this structure is a combination of hanging and base-supported elements. The ribbons play a pivotal role in displaying terminal gates, directional signage, and motion displays featuring news, updates, and advertisements. The structural framework of the ribbons is formed using bolted steel box sections, either supported by hangers from the terminal roof structure or directly supported off nearby terminal beams and columns.
The project required careful design considerations, particularly due to the limitation of construction activities to specific nighttime slots. This scheduling constraint ensured the safe construction of the ribbons while the terminal continued its normal operations during the day. This intricate balance of design, functionality, and construction logistics underscores the complexity and careful planning involved in enhancing the North Terminal at London Gatwick.
